Last October, the University System of Georgia (USG) initiated the Comprehensive Administrative Review (CAR) for all its 26 campuses. Georgia Tech was included in the first round of institutions. This examination of the administrative practices, policies, and processes of every institution in the USG is a top priority for the System and Georgia Tech. Between November 2017 and February 2018, more than 3,500 Georgia Tech employees provided input to the CAR through surveys, interviews, and focus groups.

As we begin the start of a new academic year, I want to extend a warm welcome to our new students and to welcome our returning students back to campus. The start of a new academic year is a great time to become reacquainted with familiar faces of friends and faculty, and begin to make new acquaintances. Our Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) chapter, the national leadership honor society, has invited faculty, students, and staff to gather on Tech Green anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Aug. 20 to wear a nametag and meet some of your fellow students, faculty, and staff on this first day of classes. There will be a number of special events throughout the day, and it’s a good way to meet some new people and make everyone feel welcome.

I am pleased to announce some personnel changes that will fill several recently vacated positions, strengthen our organizational structure, and address some of the issues from the recent investigative reports. This revised structure is intended to remain in place for the next six to 12 months, as we continue to evaluate and improve upon our administrative structure.

Our last day on Georgia Tour 2018 was our busiest yet! We had six meetings, along with two alumni events and a newspaper interview. We headed out early for a breakfast meeting in Athens just a short walk from the downtown Hotel Indigo where we stayed, then hit the road for Carnesville, where we enjoyed a meeting with Georgia State Sen. Frank Ginn, Chairman of the Senate Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee.

Yesterday was a busy day on behalf of our Government & Community Relations office, with five meetings set up by the GCR folks. We have a couple more today, but the Office of Development is leading the way with four events. Of course, we always finish the evening with an Alumni Association event, which provides a more leisurely, fun-filled finish to a busy day!
